Marsalforn Church

The Parish / Church

Marsalforn is the most popular summer resort in Gozo. The name is a composite word, marsa lifurna, the harbour of the caves hallowed by the sea. Marsalforn was up to the seventeenth century, before the development of Mgarr harbour, the principal seaport of Gozo. It is no more, but the place is saturated with hotels, apartments, restaurants, bars, as well as diving and water-sports clubs. The church of Marsalforn, dedicated to Saint Paul Shipwrecked, is recorded very early. The present building dates to 1730. A tradition holds that Saint Paul, after his three-month-long stay in Malta, left the island from the tiny port just beneath the church. It is the closest port of the Maltese Islands to Pozzallo, in Sicily.
